So, I just spent my first night in the new place. It was shocking just how dark and quiet it was. My old bedroom window faced an increasingly busy road and the commercial buildings across the street seemed to have aimed their lights right into my window. My place is still a mess, but my bed was set up for a good nights sleep. I was going to attach a picture of the outside, but I have to recharge the batteries for my camera. Since pictures have been requested by a few people, I will be sure to get some soon (at least of the outside). It may take a while for me to get the inside looking decent enough to show pictures of.
I guess I should explain, to those who don't already know, why it might take me a while to fix up the inside. Rewind to Saturday morning. Three members of the Elders Quorum came to help me move the big and heavy stuff, as most everything else I had already moved. I was helping to carry my (queen sized) mattress to the truck and must have stepped off the sidewalk into the "grass" and I heard the loudest POP, POP! I thought for sure everyone in town could hear it. At first I thought I broke my ankle. I had had this fear that I might really hurt myself which would be a major inconvenience since I have so much to do. Anyway, I hopped over to the tailgate of a truck and sat down, I thought I might pass out for a minute. I tried to move my toes and my ankle a bit to see if I had in fact broken anything. While it was painful, I could move everything. After driving over to the new place to unload, I found that I could hobble along with relatively little pain, if I kept my ankle just so. I had the hardest time letting everyone move my stuff while I just sat there, so I helped where I could. The guys went back to my apartment to pick up the last of the furniture while I sat on my duff. My grandparents came over to help me pack up and move my kitchen stuff and are perfect saints as they walked up and down stairs for me. I had an extremely difficult time watching them do this, so I also made several trips, being careful to take the stairs like I teach all my patients; "up with the good, down with the bad". By the end of the afternoon my ankle was pretty sore, but really not too swollen (I had wrapped it). After calling my mom, who said "you better get it checked out", and knowing she would get after me if I didn't, I went to Instacare. I waited for about 30 min to get into a room and then another 15 for the DR to get there. He was in the room maybe 2 min and said that x-ray would come get me. So, I waited another 10 min, then in x-ray another 10. The DR came back in for a min to tell me everything looked good. He offered crutches, but I knew I wouldn't use them. I did get an ankle brace which helps some. So, I am still hobbling around, but trying to be good as I look around and see everything that needs to be done. I also will be going back to work on Wednesday, so I need to try to rest up for that. I was going to try to include a picture of my weirdly swollen ankle, but can't for the same explanation as above :). It's only swollen on the outside of my left ankle. While this couldn't have happened at a more inconvenient time, I am thankful I had most of my stuff moved in already. Also, I have wonderful grandparents who helped me out, as they do. I am driving my grandpas truck as my car is a standard and I don't think my ankle could handle shifting. I have to say that frozen veggies make the best ice packs. I tried using some ice packs I had, but they just don't mold the way the veggies do. :}
Luckily I don't have to be completely out of my apartment and have it cleaned until Feb 1st, so I have some time to heal up and then clean up. All in all it wasn't as disasterous as it could have been, but it's still been hard to watch everyone else work harder than me.
until my next blog....stay safe!
